My tiny rural library offers Freading. Talking with the librarian, it's **MUCH** cheaper than an Overdrive subscription. While I haven't found a lot of books that interest me, I am quickly working my way through the Phryne Fisher mysteries by Kelly Greenwood. I've also got my eye on a couple of other mystery series -- most of which seem to be from Poisoned Pen Press.
Yeah -- I think there may be some difference between libraries. Perhaps there are different "levels" to the subscription.
Biggest challenge with Freading is that they only offer ePub. Since I have a reader that can deal with ePub, that worked for me. Someone with only a Kindle would have to deal with format shifting -- and maybe DRM removal.

I have cards at two libraries, and I marched my hubby into a nearby library and had him get a card just so that I can use their Overdrive service. This nearby library is in a regional "consortium" with my own local library and there's a rule that you can only have a card at one member of the consortium. I love my local library and didn't want to give up my card there just to get access to recent releases via Overdrive, so this worked very well.
