Back in the MS-DOS/Win3.X/Win9.X days using the FAT filesystem, cross linked files were a problem CHKDSK/SCANDISK would "fix" for you.

Under Unix/Linux and NTFS, links are a feature, though Windows doesn't expose the capability by default. You need optional Microsoft or third party tools to use it. I like Link Shell Extension for the purpose.
