I've been derailed for about two and a half weeks now. I normally would've gotten through half a dozen books in that time, but I've only made it through about 150 pages. Instead, I've been writing notes for (and the first couple of chapters of) what looks like a 120K-word novel.

I haven't written anything longer than a short story before, and that was about 20 years ago, but the characters Just. Won't. Shut. Up. So, okay, fine - I'm writing a book that I don't know how to market, about characters in a generation I'm not part of, under a name that's not mine. The frightening thing is that, according to a reader in that generation who's seen the first chapter, it's ringing true so far...

I'm not as scared as I was, but it's still shaping up to be one heckuva ride.
