AZW is a renamed MOBI.

While it is possible .mobi books work differently from .azw3 books in this regard, that does not mean anyone should be using an obsolete format which does not support many of the features which recent books will use.

For instance, embedded fonts. I don't like them, but some people do; there is even a case or two in which I would be forced to agree embedded fonts are good.

Also, MOBI books use different rendering that is nowhere near as smooth as AZW3 on my e-ink Kindle. For example, alignment is far more erratic, and em-dashes do not split across lines. Using search, some words in the results list arbitrarily lack separating spaces.
