You don't have to take the iPad out of the case to sync up. My first impression is that both the iPad Air and iPad mini solar cases are very nice. It will probably take a week or so to get a true feel for them. I will say that these cases are a bit on the bulky side, which isn't surprising given that they have a battery built in, but definitely not for someone who prefers the slim, light feel.
