I don't have a basic Kindle (have a Kindle PW2), but there are options that i can change to sort the books on the home screen by author, title, most recent, etc. When sorted by most recent, the books I've recently opened appear at the top of the list. I'd be a little surprised if the basic Kindle didn't have a setting for this as well.
