I use Windows 8.1 and have never seen any of my Kindles showing in the Safely Remove Hardware menu. However, I never use Calibre and that may trigger the requirement.

If Calibre has its own Safely Remove Hardware selection, that would probably be the best way to close the session since it would also close Calibre.

The Scan and Fix option would probably close any files left open from a prior session.
