If you Alf your books and convert with Calibre, it doesn't matter where you buy from. I buy books from Kobo, Amazon, Smashwords, indies, all over the place. With Kobo books, the thing to do is haunt the Discounts thread - there are frequently discount codes up to 65% and even higher. These don't apply to all books, but I've had a lot of luck with them.
