1.1) Always a good idea...the information about compatibility usually arrives at MR rather quickly.

3) I can't address BBB as I don't use it. As an aside, you might find the BackDoorLock hack adequate for your needs to keep Amazon from doing unwanted/unexpected updates.
4) Typically there is no need to do anything other than install the updates.
5) If you mean at the time of installation, minimal...mostly it is just what is required for rebooting your Kindle.
Last...) I use the BackDoorLock hack to prevent unwanted updates (you can still apply updates by sideloading via USB and running them) so I use wifi whenever I want to and am not worried about Amazon sending silent updates. Also, my life is boring enough that I don't care whether Amazon scavenges data from me or not so I have not dabbled with BBB.

Thanks. Although clarifying on (5): I meant to ask if the jailbreaking softwares will drain the kindle battery life more so than if I didn't install any jailbreaking software. Does Kual, BBB, MKK, etc... run any intensive background tasks that drain the battery more so than a non-jailbroken kindle?
