As a side note that's related to your question:
For your example you gave, you might consider creating a separate virtual library for your wife. Then to filter, you would go to her library and use a simple genre="fiction" filter.
I find it very convenient when more than one person uses the same Calibre library to create virtual libraries for each of them.
