That quote makes me wonder if this isn't an attempted parody of an Apple fanboy post. Or a parody of an Apple hater post within a fanboy post.

It is standard usage now to refer to people by first name in the US. A clerk will still often use Mr. Lastname. Maybe brought on by the universal "you" erasing the distinctions between formal and informal.
When referring to public figures, though, the last name alone is often used. Jobs rather than Steve. Mostly for clarity.
