I guess this has to do with the books written in the first person (is that the way to say it in English?). When I read "I do...", "I think...", "this makes me...", I tend to feel as if I were that character too. And most days I prefer to like myself

Also YA is the main audience for this series and to me this sort of books tries to have the reader empathize with the main character so they can think about what's happening and how they would react themselves then. A coming of age type of thing if you will.

Anyway,
for me (and I have no issues with people thinking differently), Katniss is a kick-ass resourceful girl but she lacks confidence, thus is pessimistic and quite self-centered at times. I know that her life was no ponies and butterflies at all, but she needs to get herself together.
