Well, silly me. I do all of my reading on my Android phone, so I was looking for the italics there. Finally, I decided to do what I should have done first, and looked at my actual Kindle. The italics were just fine on the latter. Nice to know where the bug is, and the exercise gave me the incentive to clean up the formatting and a couple of typos in the document, so not all was lost. Thanks for reinforcing that it should (and does) work.
