Cats, for the reasons in the first post. I like dogs on an individual basis, but I've only met one cat I didn't like (and that was because it was completely abusive to my own cats).

That being said, if the economy collapses and the End Of The World As We Know It occurs, we'd be sure to get a dog (perhaps a German Shepard, though my husband also has a fondness for Irish Setters) to help take care of and herd the chickens and goats we would then need to keep. And I'm sure I would develop quite a bit of affection for said canine (as well as for the goats and chickens, actually).
