@Noexpert: Yeah, that's usually caused by bad time keeping. Once the time is fixed/stable, open the book that's 'stuck' as the cover used, and then switch to another. Hopefully, that should resolve it. Is there anything special about the 'stuck' book that you could think of?
And no, the file in the userstore isn't updated until a reboot, so that's perfectly normal, it's just there to keep track of what was the current cover after a reboot.
