Tad Williams writes realy well. That's what this series has for it. But in my opinion it has many flaws: The story is one of the most unoriginal stories in fantasy. Just another little boy becomes a hero story. Some characters are special, hard to say how you will like them or not. I have found the more "philosophic" dialogues lacking. So, if you want to read a good written albeit unoriginal story, give it a try and see, if you like the characters. It is one of the better standard fantasy series out there.
