You certainly don't "have" to set up collections. You may choose to, but the device is perfectly usable without them. I have some 900 books on my PW2 and don't have collections.

This is utter nonsense. You can certainly copy files directly to a Kindle via USB. You simply copy the book to the "documents" folder on the mounted drive.

And yet you don't know that you can copy books to a Kindle via USB? Perhaps you don't know as much about the Kindle as you claim?
