You certainly don't "have" to set up collections. You may choose to, but the device is perfectly usable without them. I have some 900 books on my PW2 and don't have collections.

This is utter nonsense. You can certainly copy files directly to a Kindle via USB. You simply copy the book to the "documents" folder on the mounted drive.
