They are the places to mark (user input) status of 'read' (Calibre companion is adding remote update support)

As I understand, you can use either or both to record reading progress.
Your column, your usage rules.

I just use a date(stamp).
Previously I used a Tri-state T/F column
Blank was not read
True was done
False was not gonna try and finish this one (I don't discard books I don't like. Someone must like it )
