Exactly -- and that's the point. Customizability could be one of Kobo's selling points. You HAVE to have good answers when someone asks, "Why buy your product, which trails hugely in market share, when I can go with the clear-cut market leader, the Kindle?"
Since Kobo has clearly chosen not to (or can't) compete on hardware price, then the only answer that works is: Because with our product you can do THIS and THIS and THIS and THIS -- you don't HAVE to, but you can if you want -- and with their product you CAN'T.
On the night-mode hack, this could be a major selling point. The ad is simple: a couple lying in bed. Two pictures.
In the first picture, one person is reading on his/her PaperWhite, its light illuminating the room, and the other person is sitting up, arms crossed, looking furious, and saying, "For Pete's sake, when are you going to sleep?"
In the second picture, one person is reading on his/her Kobo Aura, with the screen inverted into night-mode, and the other person is happily snoozing away.
And the caption: "Sometimes paper dark is better than PaperWhite."
