I've done exactly that.
I didn't even have any backup, since I've sold my original iPad mini 2 months ago.
I've started entirely from scratch.

I didn't find half a dozen apps anymore, so I've downloaded them via iTunes from my purchase history and transferred them to iPad. But I don't think, it's those apps.

And, like you say: Just having the app on the tablet shouldn't make any difference.

I'll track, what apps make the iPad crash.
I've got a week left for a "pain-free" exchange...
