I know this is old news but I still find it interesting that doughnuts were actually made accidentally because the cake ball, as they called it, had its middle part uncooked so they solved it by making a hole in the middle so it's cooked evenly.
Ironically, my favorite doughnuts don't have holes in the middle and are usually bavarian filled.
