Yes, you can do that. Aldiko can find the books, I believe Aldiko has a file browser in it which you can navigate to the folders where you store your books.

As long as you can get the apps you need into the available memory, then it should be a fine tablet for reading. I got the 8GB Nook HD for the same reason, I knew I couldn't put a lot of apps on it, but I could put endless numbers of books on the card.
