There are no "universal ebook readers" as such, that I'm aware of. A tablet would be the closest, because you can install a whole variety of reading apps on it.

However, formats are much less of an issue than you might think: because the majority of ebook formats (with the exception of PDF) will easily convert to epub or mobi/azw3 with the use of Calibre.
