i did try to do what you suggested using the EDIT TOC button in calibre and clicked generate TOC from filenames but nothing seemed to happen in the merged epub.

i also tried the 3 or 4 other options presented in the EDIT TOC menu to generate the TOC using xhtl,etc but to no avail...
