I used to be a member of an Amazon Kindle group on GoodReads, and there was a great discussion on collections (and device names) -- some people came up with the most interesting ideas, some people even naming their collections after certain colours. How they managed to keep track of what was in each collection, I'll never know!

When I first got my Kindle, I used to make collections based on either genre or author surname, depending on how many books I'd managed to collect by a specific author. For example: I had both a Horror collection and a King collection. All of my Stephen King books were in the Horror collection, but obviously only my Stephen King books were in the King collection.

These days, it's simpler. I don't keep that many books on my Kindle at once -- at most, one or two complete series (at the moment I have Gabaldon's Outlander and McCullough's Masters of Rome) and a small handful of standalone works. I put the series in their own collections, and leave the other novels to roam free. I've never been a very creative person when it comes to Kindle customisation -- even my Kindle's name is just "If found please contact 0000-000-000." (My telephone number.)
