I am in the "both" category. I grew up with dogs and cats, and I played with both pets equally. I have a dog and a cat right now. For about 15 years I was without a dog until I bought my first home and then I got a German Shepherd. After owning a dog again for 7 years now, I think I might be drifting more to the dog-side. My husband rolls his eyes whenever we plan a trip because my first consideration is always will the dog be accompanying us or going to the kennel. I take great pains to find vacation rentals that welcome 85 pound quadripeds that shed. I've taken my dog on 2 vacations now and really, really liked having her along.
Now, I do love the independence of my cat. He doesn't even have a cat box. He goes outside. He's elusive. No one ever sees him except the immediate family. He's bossy. He prefers me over my husband. (This pleases me greatly since our previous cat preferred my husband over me. I was just the chow-wench). My current cat, however, is not a fan of my tendency to reproduce in recent years. He's also black, and my husband and I both call him our good luck charm.
To those of you who are cat people, I wholeheartedly acknowledge your complaints about dogs. They are filthy relentless jackals. But they are loyal and loving and my big bitch makes creepy people walk by my house on the other side of the street. The capacity of dogs to understand our language and communicate with us is very also endearing.
