It is now four days later since I asked my SIMPLE question to both thestar.com and scstandard.com's helpdesks, and I have gotten ZERO response from them. Yup, I've checked my spam folder religiously to make doubly sure.

(The simple question being, how easy is it to subscribe to two different papers which both use PressReader for their backend; does it require logging in and out each time?)

And pressreader.com's support answered me that day, at least with regards to their own service.

If that's the kind of support I'll get when stuff (inevitably) goes wrong, then I do NOT like to depend on them. Perhaps spending USD$30 for the buffet IS a better deal for me than CDN$14 for the two papers I actually want.

For what it's worth, our good friend robko above has confirmed that you can just authenticate for multiple papers, and they simply show up side by side in your unified library. However it seems that the free trial for my Standard doesn't include downloading? Gah. But thanks!
