It doesn't.
Personally I've never come across a font smoothing that I'd actually want to use and inevitably turn it off after a while. I find the high contrast of sharp edged text much preferable to the more rounded but fuzzier effect produced by smoothing/anti-aliasing/subpixel rendering etc.
