Fair enough. But here's my question: how much text would you say that you need then, to make a decision? Surely you're not saying that skipping the front-matter would always give you what you require. So forgetting about the front-matter entirely, how much of the book's text would suffice?

I, myself, am not really even looking for a whole chapter when sampling. By the time I'm ready to sample, I'm usually only performing a quick competence check--and maybe looking to get a bit of a feel for the style. So they've all been more helpful to me than no sample would have been.
