Professionally read audiobooks are much better than TTS books, but for quite some people, TTS might be just good enough. These people wouldn't pay the higher prices for the audiobooks.
I would agree if they had taken out TTS but kept audio, but they deleted audio entirely. It is likely that Amazon removed audio capacity from the e-ink readers because it saved money, and not that not enough people were buying e-ink readers to listen to audiobooks to justify the added cost of the audio equipment.
