Are metadata actually being downloaded? Are your books matched? In order for calibre to download metadata the book has to b a matched with a book at the metadata source. If there are slight spelling errors in the name of the author or title, or if you have anything except the title in the title, then metadata download is likely to fail.
One way around this is to use the ISBN-plugin. It can scan inside a book for a ISBN-number, and that will be used to match the book, instead of the author and title.
