With calibre, if you go to Preferences/output options/mobi output, there's an option for 'mobi file type'. If you want to send it to your Kindle, use 'both' rather than 'old' (mobi7) or 'new' (kf8). When it downloads to your device it will only deliver the format your device supports so it won't take any extra space there.
azw3 output is fine if you are side loading or putting it in cloud storage etc. and not using personal document service or using a Kindle 2...
