Both of my children had ebook readers starting in elementary school. My daughter's has lasted since she got it (right after the introduction of the K3 w/ special offers, so almost four years) and my son's is a hand-me-down K3 from when I got my Paperwhite right after they were released, so about 1.25 years. They carry them to school and have yet to break one.
That said, they both seem to prefer paper and still read paper books more than ebooks. My son seems to like reading on his iPod using Marvin more than on the Kindle.
