OK, sounds sensible
I've just picked a few Del Rey paperbacks off the shelf (before I gave everything away), counted the characters on a page in those books, and took the average. It was very close to 2400, so that's what I use.
My page counts in Calibre are very "paperback sized", so to say; normally the books are within +- 10% of the actual pagecounts, depending on how the paperback is laid out. A real 500 page paperback will end up being 450-500 pages in Calibre.
Knowing this, I could get it stuck into the middle, using 2,280 characters per page, but I'm now very used to this 2400 setting.
