The barrier to entry for self-publishing is lower. Therefore a lower signal-to-noise ratio is inevitable, meaning there will be a higher percentage of crap in the self-published pile. Your unique voice needs to stand out if you want to hear more than your own echo.

I'm a fan of independent publishing. It works for some of my favorite authors. But the self-published authors I follow all seem to have gotten their start in traditional publishing. Barry Eisler for example.
