It sounds like the covers show up in Calibre Companion but not the B&N device library, so "something" is in the right place for a cover image. Can the original cover formatting cause problems that might be fixed by removal and recreation? My understanding is that metadata including the cover will be updated to match the Calibre database when using "Send to device", but the original file on disk is untouched unless you use one of convert, Modify ePub or Polish. Is that correct? Would simply deleting then re-adding a cover before a sync make a difference?

Probably worth asking whether the "defective" copies have been deleted from the device before a fresh sync with Calibre Companion. I seem to have to manually delete them to get the updated version onto my device (though a different device).

Safe to assume these aren't DRM-encumbered since covers show up in CC?
