i can't even tell you anything about the charms of old detroit, since i was actually on my way to canada at the time (canada also is full of beautiful and interesting places, i can now tell you). annoyingly, i nonetheless was obliged to go through US customs and immigration, and get my suitcase from my first flight and take it MYSELF to the second flight, where i checked it back in. i suppose this reduces chances of the airlines losing it, but it still seems like a rather pointless aggravation.
