Don't blame Amazon for the popularity of Twilight. Reviews aren't disinterested evaluations of quality apart from how much people enjoyed the book. I have no interest in Twilight myself, but it's quite popular, and many people enjoy it. It would be pointless for me to tell people they are "supposed" to enjoy this book instead of that book.

Twilight has a 4.1 rating as opposed to Infinite Jest's 3.8, but all that shows is you probably want to take a look at more than just the number of stars before buying the book. That some other people liked the book doesn't necessarily mean you will.

By all means, feel free not to read any self-published books. I just find that it really isn't very hard to find the good ones.
