Mobi are Mobiread files, they were adopted by early kindles and the current ones maintain the support for backwards compatibility but they are supported by Kobo as well (if not as robustly as desired):

But back on topic, formatting may well be an issue with the specific eBook you've got rather than a file type issue. Certainly the Mobi and Mobi format PRC files I've got on my Aura HD have both formatting and resizeable text.
