You can carry them around, in a hard case and with a modicum of care. I do bang on and on a bit here about soft sleeves not being adequate transport protection - all they do is protect from superficial scratching, not from bending/twisting/direct pressure which are common causes of screen fracture.

My old Kobo Touch has survived a (now-) eleven-year-old for nearly a year and a half now, in a good hard case, including going back and forth to school.
