I bought my (then) seven year old son a Kindle Fire HD last May. I also bought an Otterbox case to help prolong its life.
He loves playing Minecraft on it, but he also loves reading on it. His video game time is restricted to a couple hours on the weekends, but he can read whenever he wants (obviously). He reads every night when he goes to bed, and on weekend nights the rule is that he's allowed to read as long as he wants. He'll usually read for a couple hours each weekend night.
I was nervous about buying it for him, but haven't regretted it all. He's a gadget geek (just like me), and I know the Kindle has made reading a little more enticing to him. That's priceless, to me. I don't care how he reads, as long as he gets in the habit early.
