I use CyanogenMod 10.1 on an 8GB NOOK HD and boot from a 32GB SD Card. I haven't noticed any performance issues. I use it mainly as an ereader (with Mantano Lite) and might not notice something that would bother you, but I haven't had any problems with sleep/resume or anything. When I want to boot back to stock, I can pop the card.
