Keep going long enough and you can get rid of the tiles. As you remove tiles, they will be replaced by tiles that slid off the view so just persevere. After using DavidFor's Kobo Utilities to remove the sync tile, I can get the home screen down to a single large gray tile saying "Reserved for your next great read" with "Add a book" at the bottom of the tile. See screen shot for an example.

Please note that most activities will add a tile to the home screen so the screen will not stay empty long.
