actually bgd since you're planning to read it before sending it along you can put an end to the suspense for me and tell me if it is in fact the book i've been looking for (as i said, i'm not sure of the title) : it should be about the narrator and a cranky, bad-tempered pipe-cleaner man (man made out of pipe-cleaners, i mean), presumably called frumpet, who has many tribulations in his daily life due to his small size and complains about them.

for instance, he has trouble drinking water, because of the water surface tension. he has trouble with his car (which is powered by a wound-up rubberband) because at his small size winding the rubber band is impossible. i forget all the details.

i believe the narrator falls asleep while looking through a microscope at the beginning of the book and this is how he finds himself on the same level as frumpet and able to communicate with him, but it's been a long time since i read it so i could have imagined that part.
