When I choose the kepub and select a chapter, it locks up the Glo. (it's hung on "loading Chapter Nine") I have to restart it and I can't always get out of the book. Sometimes it goes to the correct page in the book and sometimes it stays on loading the chapter until I restart it again and choose another book. What gives?
This is a know bug with the kepub reader. Generally, touching somewhere on the screen that causes the menu to be displayed will bring up the menu. Touching the screen again will dismiss the menus and display the text. One of the reasons this happens is if the book has embedded fonts and your font setting is "Default font". Selecting another font will prevent it in this circumstance. There seems to be another cause as this doesn't always solve it.

So ... if I use the Touch Driver, do I have to specifically tell it to transfer the kepubs, or does it default to kepub if it's there and use epub if it isn't?
In the driver configuration, there is a list of formats the driver can send to the device. If the book does not have one of those formats, it will be automatically converted to whatever format is first on the list before sending. If the book has more than one of the formats, the format that is first on the list is sent. For the KoboTouch driver, kepub defaults to the first. So, if you only hae an epub, it will be sent. If you have both an epub and a kepub, the kepub will be sent. But, you can send a specific format.

If I use the extended driver, I don't have to convert to kepub because it does it automatically on transfer ... meaning my Calibre library is smaller ...
Correct.

Are the resulting kepubs in both cases identical?
They should be as the extended driver uses the same code as the kepub output plugin.

And one last question (if you believe that I've got some ocean-front property in Arizona to sell you!):
I live on the Australian coast. You can't beat that

I installed the Kobo desktop to set up the Glo. I use Calibre to manage the device. Can I un-install the Kobo desktop? I suspect it's why my Glo will not properly eject.
Yes, you can uninstall it. I have it installed, but rarely use it. I also make sure I don't run both calibre and the Kobo desktop in the same session.
