It depends of your country, and its legislation.

For example, in France we are unquestionably allowed to share our ebooks within the circle of family and friends, or to use them in a way that was not intended by the published (like text-to-speech, printing, etc). And for doing this, we are allowed to circumvent or remove any DRM for interoperability and backups.
