I tried adding a non-amazon book by email and I was able to select it from personal documents and put it into an existing collection. If I can do the same with a KPW by sideloading from Calibre, that would make my mind up in a hurry. TIA for any help you can give - hope this question isn't off topic.

Plumadona--Harry is correct--both Amazon and non-amazon books can exist in the same collection--the Kindle doesn't segregate the books the way nooks do. That being said, I don't use collections on my KPW2. To me, the Kindle's implementation of collections are too cumbersome to use with side-loaded books. I read a lot of series books and would prefer to have collections for each series, but I've started using Calibre's plugboards to add the series information to the book title before transferring to my KPW2 and that's an acceptable alternative for me.
