re: the ??? characters. Dark Courier may not have very good coverage of many of those ascii-art unicode characters. Try a few more Mono fonts to see if you can find a better one. DroidSansMono and LiberationMono both have more glyphs than DarkCourier, but whether they are the glyphs you need, I don't know.
