Flash drives etc are fine to remove without ejecting as long as they have stopped flashing (i.e. writing/reading to the device) and say so in the instructions in most cases these days. I would NOT recommend routinely removing a Kobo without ejecting as there have been way to many issues with doing so corrupting databases on the device (and it specifically warns you to eject it on the screen).
