I view the DRM "upgrade" as inconsequential because in 6-12 months it will be broken, while the changes Adobe decides to make in their rendering of ePub3, how they implement the changes and what parts of ePub3 they do implement will still affect our reading in 6 years.

No conspiracy theory, but they seem to have decided to make the DRM release first to alert users to what's coming, force them to do something to prepare for it, and possibly avoid being blamed by people who don't prepare.

To my way of thinking the books are the only thing that really matters.
